High school seniors have only a few more weeks to submit their applications for financial assistance from the OOIDA Mary Johnston Scholarship fund.

Scholarship applications must be postmarked by Wednesday, Feb. 1, for the 2012-2013 school year.

The OOIDA scholarship fund was established in 1998 to help the children, grandchildren and legal dependents of dues-paying OOIDA members achieve their goals of furthering their education.

Scholarship winners are selected based on grades, extracurricular activities, and their 500-word essays are based on the following three questions designed by the OOIDA scholarship committee:

  • List and discuss three positive aspects of the influence of the trucker in your life;
  • How does your choice of an educational goal utilize the strongest attributes of your personality; and
  • What changes do you see down the road in five or 10 years that would improve the trucking industry?

The committee awards one first-place scholarship for $2,000 and four $1,000 awards that can be renewed for up to four years.

For more information, contact OOIDA’s Membership Department at 800-444-5791 or email

There is also a new online donation site where OOIDA members and others who support the scholarship program can contribute their tax-free donations toward this worthy cause.  Shell Rotella has again generously donated $10,000 to the scholarship fund, making Shell the top corporate benefactor for the fourth straight year.
