OOIDA’s Truckers for Troops begins Dec. 5

| 10/7/2011

OOIDA’s fifth annual Truckers for Troops – scheduled for Dec. 5-9 this year – is one of the Association’s favorite events. The effort raises money to pack and send care packages to service personnel stationed in combat zones, primarily in Iraq and Afghanistan.

To raise money to fund the care boxes, OOIDA and its members join together in a December campaign that begins Monday, Dec. 5. During Truckers for Troops week, a broadcast is planned for each day on OOIDA’s Land Line Now satellite radio show. During the week of the campaign, truckers can join OOIDA or renew their membership for $25, with 10 percent of that money going toward care packages for U.S. troops stationed in combat areas overseas. OOIDA matches the 10 percent dollar for dollar.

OOIDA staff and volunteers fill the packages with things like snacks, socks, foot powder, body soap, books, magazines, pens, envelopes, games, Frisbees, silly string, caps, undershirts and other items. The boxes are packed and sent from OOIDA’s Grain Valley, MO, headquarters. The Association reports that 737 boxes were sent in the 2010 effort.
