Funding for I-5 bridge over Columbia River in danger

A new $3 billion-plus bridge linking Washington and Oregon could become one of the casualties of the federal budget crunch.

The new 10-lane bridge across the Columbia River is designed to replace the existing six-lane bridge, part of which is 94 years old and considered to be vulnerable to an earthquake.

U.S. Rep. Peter DeFazio, D-OR, told The Associated Press there’s a “very, very, very, very grim prospect” that Congressional Republicans or the White House will make major new investments in roads and bridges. Republicans have announced they want to cut transportation funding by a third.
