Kansas, Wisconsin offering retrofit, idle-reduction grants

Kansas truck owners can apply now for diesel grants of $5,000 to $100,000.

Until Aug. 15, the state of Kansas is accepting applications for its diesel grant program, which is administered competitively. Applicants can put together plans to upgrade or replace diesel equipment, and they are encouraged to voluntarily match grant funds with their own money.

Some fleet projects require matching funds.

The program is open to “public and private on-highway fleet operators based in Kansas,” the Kansas Department of Health and Environment announced.

The grant covers retrofits that reduce particulate matter, diesel-saving idle-reduction technologies and engine repowers and “emission upgrades for older engines,” the state said.

Dozens of OOIDA members have obtained grants through Wisconsin’s diesel emission reduction programs, and it looks as if the trucking industry will have another crack at grants for the state’s 2011-2012 program.

The Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services is providing reimbursement grants for up to 50 percent of the cost of idling-reduction equipment such as APUs.

Applicants must be headquartered in Wisconsin, must pay at least half of eligible costs for each idling-reduction unit, and must collect and report information about the unit’s operation and performance. The truck they’re installed to must have a 1999 model year or newer engine.

Though the state did not release a definite amount of the grants, an informational sheet says it expects to dole out $1 million during the 2011-2012 grant cycle.

Wisconsin’s diesel programs have attempted to spread its grants to owner-operators and small business trucking operations, as well as larger transportation businesses – something not every state has tried.
