Truckers Jamboree in Walcott: July 14, 15

| Friday, July 01, 2011

Since its inception in 1979, the Truckers Jamboree in Walcott, IA, has been celebrating America’s truckers. When you get off I-80 on Exit 284 and pull into the Iowa 80 Truck Stop, you have no doubt in your mind that this is driver appreciation at its finest.

The Truckers Jamboree is hosted every year in Walcott. This year it will be held July 14 and 15 and if you haven’t made plans, it’s time.

This year, the schedule of events includes an antique display, Super Truck beauty contest, Iowa pork chop cookout, carnival games, trucker olympics, fireworks, more than 175 exhibits and live country music. This year, Marty Stuart will entertain from 7 to 10 p.m. on Thursday night, July 14.

OOIDA plans to be on hand with staffers from the Association’s Missouri headquarters. The OOIDA tour truck will also be at the Jamboree, along with OOIDA Board Member Miles Verhoef.

OOIDA Senior Member Jon Osburn will be at Walcott with the MeRV. The MeRV is owned and operated by Boardman Medical Supply. At the MeRV, drivers can get a free “wellness check.” This includes a reading of pulse, respiration, O2 concentration and blood pressure, along with discussion of driver’s needs, history and health concerns.

Osburn can also refer drivers to a doctor, dentist, chiropractor or other medical providers if requested. The MeRV also offers free CPAP and APAP cleaning. Other services available include an A1C test for $25, a fecal occult blood test for $40, plus sleep apnea testing. The test is $399, and if you are an OOIDA member, there’s a $100 discount.

The Moon family, owners of the I-80 Group, say the Walcott Jamboree is their way of saying “thank you to the millions of truck drivers that deliver the goods we consume. Whether it’s groceries, gas, clothes or cars – you can bet it was delivered by a truck.”

The Iowa 80 TA Truckstop is part of the Iowa 80 Group that also owns Joplin 44 Petro, Joplin, MO; Oak Grove 70 Petro, Oak Grove, MO; and the Kenly 95 Petro, Kenly, NC.
