Krabby Patties? Fake trucking company makes $400,000 crab haul

A cargo theft gang has been blamed for the recent theft of nearly a half million dollars worth of crab meat that was supposed to be headed from Los Angeles to Seattle.

According to media reports, a man passing himself off as a trucker used dummied up documents from a fake motor carrier to pick up a load of 25,000 pounds of king crab May 20.

The Seattle Times reported that the load was picked up from a cold storage warehouse, but never delivered, and investigators believe a “well-organized” fraud ring is behind the theft.

The Oregon driver’s insurance and license appeared legitimate at first, the newspaper reported.

King crab prices have soared to new levels this year, making the fresh fish a target.
