The Missouri Department of Transportation was scheduled to tear down two aging rest areas at mile marker 168 at Mineola on Interstate 70 on Tuesday, May 31.
However, instead of closing the sites completely, DeAnne Rickabaugh of MoDOT Motor Carrier Services, told Land Line recently that they recognize the importance of having safe spots for truckers to rest and will reopen them as truck-only lots.
On Tuesday, she said the sites “will be completely closed for three days while we board up the buildings and do a little bit of work.”
However, she said the sites will be reopened for truck parking “during the conversion” barring any problems.
“We are going to allow trucks to go ahead and park in the safe areas and that will be any night as long as it’s safe to do so and truckers respect the construction barriers,” Rickabaugh said.
Vault toilet facilities will be installed at the Mineola sites.
A week ago, she said, new welcome centers on Interstate 55 opened for business at Marston, southbound at mile marker 42, and at Hayti, northbound at mile marker 20.
“The Marston welcome center adds 64 truck parking spaces and the Hayti center adds 60 truck parking spaces in Southeast Missouri,” Rickabaugh said. “These are not just rest areas with a building. There is some fun stuff there, from playgrounds and pet areas to information on what makes the local area unique.”
She said MoDOT is committed to adding or preserving truck parking spots where they can.
