DeAnne Rickabaugh, a MoDOT spokesperson, told Land Line, that electronic comments will be accepted through March 4 on the agency?s plan. She said the agency?s preliminary plan is to raze the current sites and add approximately 15 to 20 additional truck spots at each of the two sites located at mile marker 110 near Fruitland on Interstate 55.

Rickabaugh said each site would be able to accommodate 30 trucks under MoDOT?s new plan.

?The rest areas near Fruitland are nearly obsolete,? Rickabaugh said. ?The MoDOT Southeast District team is seeking input on converting the sites to truck parking only. Comments from carriers, drivers and all others with an interest in the idea are welcome.?

In a MoDOT release, Eric Krapf, project manager, stated that ?outdated facilities, the cost of upkeep and cleaning of the facilities, and limited truck parking? were the three major reasons for the proposed changes.

Krapf added that the sites would include portable restrooms.
