High school seniors have one more day to submit their applications for financial assistance from the OOIDA-Mary Johnston Scholarship committee.
Scholarship applications must be postmarked by Tuesday, Feb. 1, for the 2011-2012 school year.
The OOIDA scholarship fund was established 12 years ago to help the children, grandchildren and legal dependents of dues-paying OOIDA members achieve their goals of furthering their education. The scholarship committee recently checked in with previous scholarship winners, who are pursuing careers as medical researchers, teachers and veterinarians, among others.
The 2010-2011 scholarship winner, Logan Mahalek, is majoring in diesel technology at Southeast Community College in Milford, NE. His $2,000 scholarship will help him offset the costs of college, which can be renewed for another three years for a total amount of $8,000.
Logan and his grandpa, OOIDA Life Member Wesley ?Dean? Wills of Garland, NE, are currently rebuilding a 1953 Peterbilt together.
Scholarship winners are selected based on grades, extracurricular activities, and their answers to the following three questions designed by the OOIDA scholarship committee:
- List and discuss three positive aspects of the influence of the trucker in your life;
- How does your choice of an educational goal utilize the strongest attributes of your personality; and
- Formulate a helpful suggestion on how to improve the public image of professional truck drivers.
The committee awards one first-place scholarship for $2,000 and four $1,000 awards that can be renewed for up to four years.
