Trucking insurance agent arrested for stealing, not placing policies

Authorities in California say a licensed insurance agent collected premiums from several long-haul trucking businesses but didn’t secure actual policies to protect the motor carriers.

Paul Daniel Cornejo, 29, who is a licensed insurance broker, was arrested at his Adelanto, CA, home on four felony counts of grand theft, three felony counts of forgery, two felony counts of theft by false pretence and three misdemeanor counts of theft.

Investigators believe that victim losses so far total about $38,000. Cornejo’s company served clients in the Inland Empire area as Tatemas Truck Insurance Services and Royal Insurance Group Services, Inc.

“Instead of remitting the funds to any insurance company, Cornejo issued fraudulent Certificates of Insurance without placing actual insurance coverage,” a news release states.

Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones said in a news release that Cornejo’s license to sell insurance is under review.

Anyone who believes they may be a victim should call the state insurance investigation division at 909-919-2233. Cornejo is being prosecuted by the San Bernardino County District Attorney’s Office.
