The Missouri Department of Transportation announced that work will begin after Memorial Day to convert two aging rest areas into truck-only parking sites.
On Thursday, April 14, MoDOT issued a release stating that the Mineola rest areas at mile marker 168 on Interstate 70 would be permanently closed and the buildings razed to allow for more truck parking. Vault restroom facilities will be installed at the sites.
MoDOT’s plan is to double the number of existing truck parking spaces at the sites to approximately 70. The improvements will increase the number of spaces from 20 to 37 on the eastbound side, and from 16 to 33 on the westbound side.
“The rest area facilities at mile marker 168 are outdated,” according to the MoDOT release. “Updates needed to ensure continued environmental compliance are too expensive to pursue. Another critical concern was the ongoing need for more parking facilities for commercial trucks.”
Limited truck parking will be allowed during construction. Truckers are urged to use the rest areas at Wright City, located at mile marker 198, and at Boonville, at mile marker 104, while work is being done.
