The trucking community is reeling from the news that another one of their own has died because of senseless violence while out on the road.

Police say that Truman L. Smith, 40, of Irondale, MO, was found lying on the ground next to his truck early Thursday, Feb. 17, at Fresh Warehousing in East St. Louis, IL. He had been shot in the chest during an apparent robbery while trying to make a delivery. At this time, it is not known if the gunman took anything from Smith.

Illinois State Police Lt. James Morrisey said that Smith had parked his truck on the street and may have gotten out to push a button to activate the gate that surrounded the warehouse, according to a St. Louis Post-Dispatch report.

Smith was transported to Kenneth Hall Memorial Hospital in East St. Louis where he was pronounced dead.

A former Marine and father of three, Smith drove for E & K Truck Services in St. Clair, MO.
