Truckers inspired by holiday spirit now help each other year round

Three years ago, a group of truckers was networking online when an idea was conceived to raise some money to give to struggling trucking families for Christmas.

The Let’s Truck Christmas Group has been successful in its effort and has even inspired a full-time organization dedicated to helping truckers in need. OOIDA Life Member Lance Wood of Summerfield, IL, is a member of the Christmas group. He now heads Trucker Charity, Inc., a 501(c)(3) that helps truckers in need year round.

Funds are raised through items sold on the Let’s Truck Christmas website and via donations. Nominations for needy trucking families will be accepted through Sunday, Dec. 19.

On Monday, a panel of volunteers, including OOIDA Member Maggie Stone of Concordia, MO, and OOIDA Life Member Ralph Acocella of Hickory, NC, will review applications and determine how many families will receive assistance this year.

Stone is one of the original members of the Christmas group and is hopeful this will be the best year yet. This is Acocella’s first year on the panel, and he is looking forward to bringing much-needed Christmas cheer to truckers with struggling families. Some current panel members have been beneficiaries of the Christmas group in the past.
