The energy level at the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association headquarters is off the charts. It’s time for the fourth annual OOIDA Truckers for Troops.
The annual event has become an awe-inspiring display of the spirit of giving and of the deep-rooted pride in the men and women who serve the U.S. in combat areas overseas.
Starting tonight, Land Line Now, the Association’s news and information radio show on the Road Dog Channel Sirius 147, XM 171, will bring that spirit of giving and patriotism alive each night this week, Dec. 6-10.
The show will feature heartwarming letters from troops who have received the care packages in the past, stories of men and women who are currently in the armed forces, and interviews with family members of those who serve.
During the week of Dec. 6-10 truckers can join OOIDA or renew their membership for $25, with 10 percent of that money going toward care packages for U.S. troops stationed in combat areas overseas. OOIDA will match the 10 percent dollar-for-dollar.
The weeklong campaign to raise money to provide care packages for members of the military has been met with an outpouring of support from the trucking community in its first three years, raising $158,623.60.
The 2009 effort raised enough money to provide 622 care packages. Each package weighs as much as 70 pounds and is packed with enough essentials – from warm socks to fun items like Frisbees and playing cards – to serve an entire unit. It’s estimated that more than 7,400 troops benefitted from OOIDA Truckers for Troops care packages this past year.
Anyone wanting to join OOIDA or donate to Truckers for Troops can call in during regular business hours at 800-444-5791. Also, throughout the week, members from OOIDA’s switchboard and membership departments – along with other volunteers from around the Association – will be on hand on through the airing of Land Line Now until 7:30 p.m. Central Standard Time.
Truckers can also mail in the dues and/or donations to:

Please note on the check if the payment is for dues, dues and donation, or donation and indicate “Troops” on the memo line.
