Another wreck on BC bridge triggers questions

| Thursday, August 19, 2010

In British Columbia, the head of the province’s trucking association is calling for a federal investigation into a fatal truck crash in the early morning hours of Tuesday, Aug. 17.

Paul Landry says it’s the third time in four years that a tractor-trailer has gone off the Vedder Canal Bridge on Highway 1 near Chilliwack.

In Tuesday’s crash, a 50-year-old trucker died when his rig went through the guardrail and the tractor plunged 20 feet to the water below. In two other cases where trucks have gone off the bridge in recent years, one driver was killed and another injured.

Some truckers have complained the bridge is narrow and has no shoulder.

A transportation ministry spokesman says engineers will be examining the bridge, but said the bridge is the standard width and has a straight approach.
