MoDOT taking I-44 back to four lanes

| Monday, April 12, 2010

Beginning Tuesday, April 13, and for two weeks thereafter, MoDOT will repave and restripe Interstate 44 in the St. Louis area between I-270 and I-55, starting with the eastbound lanes. All work will be done at night (7 p.m. to 6:30 a.m.) with various lane closures Monday through Friday.

When the lanes are striped, I-44 will return to its original four-lane configuration. In 2007, I-44 was striped with an additional lane in each direction between I-270 and I-55, using the shoulders as driving lanes to add capacity while I-64/U.S. 40 was under construction.

MoDot announced Monday that drivers should also be aware that the I-270 southbound to I-44 eastbound loop ramp will adjust to a single-lane ramp. It was a two-lane ramp. The current shared exit/through lane on I-270 southbound to I-44 eastbound will be returned to an exit lane only.

A new type of inlaid pavement markers will be used to improve the safety of the corridor and the striping visibility during wet or night conditions.

Truckers and motorists should expect delays during this work and are encouraged to use alternate routes. For more info, call 888-ASK-MODOT or go to www.modot.org/.
