Milwaukee Zoo Interchange makeover means delays, closures

| Thursday, March 04, 2010

Overnight closures are taking place this week as crews replace bridges and ramps within Milwaukee’s busy Zoo Interchange. Portions of I-94, I-894 and U.S. 45 have carried weight restrictions for trucks during the past six months.

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation will close portions of these highways from 9:30 p.m. to 5 a.m. tonight and each night through Sunday, March 7. More closures may be necessary later. The schedule is subject to change along with the weather. Click here for a specific list of lane closures by date.

Back in August 2009, WIDOT determined that several parts of the interchange were in serious need of replacement ahead of earlier predictions. WIDOT restricted truck weights to 30 tons, 35 tons and 40 tons on some ramps. Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Department has been using portable scales to enforce the restrictions.

Stimulus money from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act is helping Wisconsin to speed up the repairs. Approximately 350,000 vehicles pass through the interchange each day.
