CARB to begin enforcing reefer regulation this Thursday, Dec. 31

The California Air Resources Board begins enforcement of its new emissions rule for reefers beginning this Thursday, Dec. 31.

CARB said enforcement of in-use performance standards will begin in January 2010 for all trucks with model year 2002 and older reefers.

The state requires all in-state motor carriers to sign up with CARB’s TRU registry, and recommends that TRUS based outside the state register. California-based truck owners can register online through California’s Air Resources Board Equipment Registration (ARBER) system.

In a recent e-mail announcement, CARB said its TRU inspection teams will enforce the regulation at “distribution centers, scales, border crossings, truck stops, ports, intermodal facilities and other locations.”

In-state businesses that fail to register their reefer with the state may be penalized up to $500 per violation, and those cited for failing to meet the in-use performance standards can be fined for up to $1,000 per violation.

For more information, reefer owners can call CARB’s toll-free TRU Help Line during business hours at 888-878-2826, or email
