Road conditions worsen in Iowa

| Tuesday, December 08, 2009

The Missouri Department of Transportation’s Northwest Missouri office learned Tuesday afternoon that Iowa had closed Interstate 29 beginning at the Missouri State line. Multiple crashes on the interstate because of the ongoing winter storm caused the closure.

It is not known when Iowa will reopen I-29.

MoDOT rest areas on I-29 North are located at Mound City (7 truck spaces) and Dearborn (21 truck spaces). Commercial drivers who were headed north into Iowa on I-29 are advised to find an alternate route or a parking space.

The Iowa Department of Transportation's Office of Motor Carrier Services reminds commercial carriers that movement of permitted oversize loads is allowed only when the roadways are clear of ice and snow, and visibility is at least one-fourth of a mile.

Because snow was already falling in Iowa and is expected to continue, OSOW loads were not allowed in Iowa on Tuesday, Dec. 8. It's advisable to check from day to day on this situation.
