Dr. John McElligott opens 24-hour medical call center for truckers

Truck drivers who are short on time and have trouble finding doctor’s offices with truck parking have a new option available to them.

Dr. John McElligott, who formerly ran a chain of trucker medical offices at truck stops, has helped open a new subscription-based call center that serves truck drivers and their families.

Dr. John’s Trucker Call Center opened on Nov. 10. The call center, available at 877-514-TRUC (8782), provides truckers and their families with access to a doctor by phone or e-mail 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

“Our doctors are there to answer simple questions or give you a consultation and prescribe medications if needed,” McElligott told Land Line.

The call center costs $29.95 per month for a driver, and $39.95 monthly for an entire family to join. Members of the call center obtain discounts through a prescription benefit program.

McElligott said he and other physicians ran a small call center in the spring after the Professional Drivers Medical Depot closed its doors. McElligott wanted to make sure his patients were being provided for.

“We had an obligation back in the spring,” he said. “I had to take care of these guys. I had to be there when they called.”

The new call center is a partnership with AmeriDoc, an online medical consultation service, and offers a sleep center and a network of labs and hospitals.

“We’re going to be adding more products, and we’re just going to find people that treat truckers like human beings, and put that effort into the call center,” McElligott said. “We’re headed in the right direction.”
