CARB lists reefer retrofit options before December deadline

| 10/12/2009

The California Air Resources Board has published a list of diesel particulate matter retrofits that truck owners can use to comply with the agency’s upcoming reefer rule enforcement.

The list is available at www.arb.ca.gov/diesel/tru.htm.

Trucks that haul reefers in California have until Dec. 31, 2009, to meet the equipment portion of the state’s “In-Use Performance Standards” for 2001 and older reefers.

CARB said enforcement of in-use performance standards will begin in January 2010 for all model year 2002 and older reefers.

The state requires all in-state motor carriers to sign up with CARB’s TRU registry. California-based truck owners can register online through California’s Air Resources Board Equipment Registration (ARBER) system.

“Citations will be issued to all noncompliant TRU owners and operators,” a CARB statement read. “Penalties will be up to $500 per nonregistered, California-based TRU but can possibly be more for serious cases. Ticketed TRU owners will also be subject to full audits by ARB for all applicable diesel engine regulations.”

CARB strongly encourages out-of-state motor carriers to sign up for the TRU registry.
