Two years later, police ask for help on Texas team driver slaying

Police in Texas are asking for the public’s help to solve the cold case killing involving a female team driver in 2007.

Vernice Louise Colvin, 43, went missing on Jan. 11, 2007. She had last been seen at a truck stop in Horizon City, TX. Authorities found her body on Jan. 20 in the desert near Interstate 10 east, according to the El Paso Times.

El Paso County Sheriff’s deputies have worked for more than two years to nail down leads, but so far have reportedly been unsuccessful.

Sgt. Jim Belknap told the Times that the I-10 corridor has endured a string of truck stop killings, but law enforcement officers had no reason to believe Colvin’s killing is related.

Colvin was last seen with her boyfriend, driver John Welch, now 49, who reportedly was seen arguing with Colvin at Sal’s Lounge next to the truck stop shortly before her disappearance.

Welch told authorities that Colvin hitchhiked with another trucker to find a way home.

The couple had dropped a shipment off in San Diego and were headed to North Carolina when they stopped in El Paso, the Times reported.

Investigators are looking for witnesses who may have seen the couple at Sal’s Lounge or at the Petro Truck Stop in Horizon City, TX, in January 2007.

Anyone with information is asked to call at 915-546-2280.
