SuperRigs: Where’s my shades?

| Friday, June 19, 2009

On the first day of the 27th Annual Shell Rotella SuperRigs, the white hot sun reflecting off the polished chrome in the parking lot at the Oak Grove Petro east of Kansas City, MO, was so intense that Shell should have been warning spectators to wear sunglasses.

The contest kicked off Thursday at the Oak Grove 70 Petro in Oak Grove, MO. Contestants in the 27th annual Shell Rotella SuperRigs event that wraps up Saturday, June 20, will have a shot at $25,000 in prizes.

Twelve winners will have their trucks featured in the 2010 Shell Rotella SuperRigs calendar.

Land Line Magazine Senior Editor Jami Jones is once again serving on the SuperRigs judges’ panel. Trucking media – and connoisseurs – Steve Sturgess, Dorothy Cox, Bruce Smith and Eric Harley are also on hand for the judging. Tonight, they will judge Big Rigs Lights at 9 p.m.

SuperRigs, considered the premier truck beauty contest for actively working trucks, is taking place at the Oak Grove 70 Petro, located at Exit 28 on Interstate 70 in Oak Grove, MO. And if show truck competition isn’t enough for you, you can test your truck driving skills, just trying to get into the Petro parking lot, courtesy of the city of Oak Grove, MO, and its road construction at the truck stop’s entrance. So be sure to watch for signs directing you into the parking lot.

Each day kicks off with event judging and ends with contests and awards. The time in between is packed with raffles, entertainment, a pet contest, trucker bingo, sights and bright lights.
Singer Cody McCarver performs at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, June 19, riding the success of recent hit singles and videos. The Tennessee native describes his roots as classic country, gospel and southern rock.

Singer and OOIDA member Joey Holiday performs each day of the event. Other highlights include the No. 29 Shell-Pennzoil Kevin Harvick show car, the Shell racing simulator and, of course, the truck show.

OOIDA’s touring truck, “Spirit of the American Trucker,” will be on display. Drop by and see Howard and Pam Hart who will be there signing up new OOIDA members. As they would say, “Bring a friend.”
