Missouri creates new ‘travel safe zone’

| Thursday, March 19, 2009

If you travel Interstate 55 in Missouri, be aware that the state DOT has created a new “travel safe zone” on a five-mile stretch south of St. Louis.

Fines for traffic violations are doubled in travel safe zones, Missouri Department of Transportation officials stated in a press release Thursday, March 19.

The purpose of the zone is to remind motorists about safety and to reduce accidents on I-55, MoDOT officials said.

Message boards will inform drivers when they enter the zone. Another feature of message boards is to post the number of tickets issued within the zone, officials said.

The travel safe zone is in effect from Friday, March 20, through Sept. 18.
