Trucker drowns in Ohio floodwaters

| Friday, March 13, 2009

Searchers in Putnam County, OH, this morning found the body of a trucker who drowned after he drove into swift floodwaters Wednesday night, March 11, then abandoned his truck and apparently tried to wade to shore. Heavy rains in the northwest corner of Ohio led to widespread flooding this week.

The sheriff’s office said the body of 74-year-old Clyde Mayo of Martinton, IL, was found about 900 feet from the truck.

Mayo was an OOIDA member. He drove for Mark Hathaway of Rossville, IL.

During the day, a storm packing torrential rains had knocked out all the lights in the area. Authorities believe Mayo may have become lost off state Route 15 near the Blanchard River before turning onto a country road that was flooded.

Authorities say the floodwater was running about 4 feet deep with enough force that the fully loaded tractor-trailer was swept off the road.
