Daimler Trucks North America, parent company of Freightliner trucks, announced Thursday, Jan. 8, that it’s cutting more than 2,100 at three of its Freightliner plants in North Carolina.

The Charlotte Observer reports the Mount Holly, Gastonia and Rowan County plants will lay off 2,137 workers on March 13. Daimler’s president calls the job cuts “unavoidable and necessary.”

According to the Observer, a UAW official says the union knew layoffs were coming, but didn’t expect them to be so big.
