OOIDA’s Truckers for Troops project: seeking handmade cards

| Wednesday, December 24, 2008

OOIDA’s Truckers for Troops Telethon raised more than $54,000 during its campaign Dec. 8-12. The target: raise money to send care packages to troops serving in combat areas overseas. While the care packages are stuffed with both necessary and fun items, there are also those special gifts from home that can’t be bought in any store.

Like this past year, OOIDA plans to include in every box plenty of handmade greeting cards.

“We know that many eyes were lit up by seeing such an outpouring of support in the form of cards and letters,” said Norita Taylor, media spokesperson for OOIDA. “We’d like for anyone, especially school-age children of any grade level, to participate again this year.”

Participants should send cards or letters to OOIDA headquarters, attention Norita Taylor or Truckers for Troops, P.O. Box 1000, Grain Valley, MO 64029-0712.

Taylor says the Association is also seeking the names and addresses of those in need of care packages. Last year, the Association relied upon word of mouth to collect names and addresses of units in places like Iraq and Afghanistan. Use the same contact info for Norita Taylor. You can also e-mail her at norita_taylor@ooida.com.

Although the radio telethon is over, donations are still welcome. And the special membership discount that was part of the Truckers for Troops campaign is good through the end of January 2009. Regular $45 dues are discounted to $25 until then.
