Statistics from the Small Business Administration show that 95 percent of all small-business ventures fail within the first year, with the primary reason for the failures being a lack of business management skills.
Between that statistic and all of the regulations and other pitfalls small-business truckers face, it’s no surprise that many owner-operators find themselves in difficult situations. But there is help available.
The Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association Foundation Inc. is offering a business management seminar for owner-operators in October. This fall’s session marks the fourth time that the Foundation will offer the seminar, which was booked to capacity for the previous three sessions.
The seminar offers those drivers who are considering becoming owner-operators – and those who have already taken the plunge – a practical no-nonsense look at the cost of doing business in the highly competitive trucking industry. The topics covered in the seminar will provide participants with the basis for a successful small trucking business.
Experts in trucking – staff of OOIDA and the Foundation – will conduct the seminar, which is open to anyone interested in learning about the business management skills that are unique to the trucking industry.
Research by the Foundation shows that the spouses of drivers often handle the business end of the operation, but have very little background to draw upon. By addressing that fact, the seminar has been popular with drivers and their spouses.
For OOIDA members, the $450 cost for the seminar includes forms, portfolios, CDs, two meals a day, and professionals who will help participants sort out the myths and truths of trucking. For non-OOIDA members, the price is $475, which includes a full year’s membership in the Association.
The Foundation does not charge full price for drivers’ spouses. Spouses who attend the seminar with their trucking mates are only charged an additional $48 to cover the cost of meals.
This fall’s session of the OOIDA Business Seminar is scheduled for Oct. 7-9. The seminar will be at the OOIDA headquarters in Grain Valley, MO.
To enroll, call OOIDA at 800-444-5791 and tell the operator you want to enroll in the business seminar. There is limited space. Only the first 25 applicants to complete enrollment will be accepted.
