HOS waived for relief supply deliveries in four states

| Tuesday, September 02, 2008

Truckers assisting with relief efforts after Hurricane Gustav may be relieved from compliance with the hours-of-service regulations.

The governors of Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama issued emergency declarations for various areas hit by Gustav. Because of those declarations, truckers providing certain types of relief assistance are relieved from Parts 390-399 of the regs until Sept. 26.

A notice on the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Web site states:
“Motor carriers and drivers providing direct emergency relief to, from or within the areas covered by the declarations are temporarily relieved from Parts 390-399 of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations, including hours of service (HOS), regardless of commodity carried.”

Truckers should not assume they are operating under the waivers until they have coordinated with state and federal emergency officials before providing assistance.
