New travel plaza in Oklahoma to offer 18 truck parking spots

| Tuesday, August 19, 2008

The number of truck parking spaces available at travel plazas and rest areas is an important issue for truckers. Construction is currently under way in Oklahoma to open a new travel plaza – the Lone Chimney Plaza – just west of Oklahoma highway 18 on the Cimarron Turnpike.

Jack Damrill, public information officer for the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority, told Land Line on Tuesday, Aug. 19, that the plaza will have 18 truck parking spaces and 55 car spaces available. He said the plaza’s original plan was to be open by December 2008, but that the deadline has been pushed back to January of 2009.

The Oklahoma Turnpike Authority spent more than $250,000 preparing the site on which McDonald’s will construct a $1.8 million, 10,600-square-foot building that will also house a Kum & Go convenience store and fuel stop.

Damrill said the Turnpike Authority is also considering plans to upgrade and expand all of its plazas and rest areas in the state, but added that no official decisions on the remaining sites have been made yet.
