Drop in U.S. driving continues

| 8/14/2008

For the eighth straight month the number of miles driven in the U.S. has dropped.

The U.S. Department of Transportation reported that Americans have driven 53 billion fewer miles in the past eight months than in the same period a year ago. Americans drove 4.7 percent less, or 12.2 billion miles fewer, in June 2008 than in June 2007.

The Federal Highway Administration collects vehicle-miles-traveled data for all motor vehicles through more than 4,000 automatic traffic recorders operated by state highway agencies.
