Every member of Congress received a letter Wednesday, June 18, calling for immediate action on skyrocketing energy costs because of the devastating impact on the budgets of American families.
“We are writing to strongly urge the Congress to take decisive, effective and immediate action to address the rising cost of energy in the United States today,” the letter from 77 different groups stated. “The skyrocketing cost of oil and gas is now impacting every industry sector, large and small businesses, and every American who relies on gasoline or diesel fuel for work and family needs.”
The diversity of the 77 groups signing the letter illustrates just how far the negative impact of high energy costs is reaching into the U.S. economy.
The 77 groups represent a huge cross-section of U.S. consumers and business owners, from groups such as the American Bakers Association and the National Funeral Directors Association all the way to the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.
“Continued escalation in the price of oil and gas threatens the U.S. economy and is having a devastating impact on the budgets of American households,” officials with the groups wrote in the letter.
“Congress must act now to respond to the need for affordable energy with stable prices by taking every possible step to encourage the environmentally sensitive development of domestic energy resources.”
The groups advocate action to increase domestic oil and natural gas production and for Congress to adopt policies that will reduce the dependence of the U.S. on foreign energy supplies.
“While we support initiatives that encourage conservation and the development of alternative energy sources, these alternatives will not address U.S. demand for oil and gas for the next quarter century at least,” group officials wrote in the letter.
