Alabama-Florida toll road hitting roadblocks

| Friday, June 13, 2008

Public opinion is having an impact on plans by a private investment group to build a new toll road connecting southern Alabama with Interstate 10 in the Florida Panhandle.

The Houston County Commission in Alabama has endorsed the proposal by an investment group called Focus 2000 of the Wiregrass, but things are different in Washington County, FL.

Residents of Chipley, FL, showed up in numbers to protest the proposal at a public meeting in May. Washington County commissioners responded Monday, June 9, by voting to not endorse the toll road proposal.

Focus 2000 is proposing the roadway through six counties – three on each side of the state line – connecting Montgomery, AL, to Panama City, FL, but has not provided an exact route.

A Houston County official in Dothan, AL, told Land Line in May that the concept for an I-10 connector has been around in one form or another for 15-20 years.
