The 26th annual Shell Rotella SuperRigs competition has been drawing truck lovers to the Iowa 80 Truckstop this week and is expected to continue to do so through Saturday, June 7, when the event wraps up and the winners are announced.
On the asphalt at the Iowa 80 Truckstop near Exit 284 of Interstate 80 in Walcott, IA, this year, the event is considered by many in the industry to be the “Super Bowl” of truck beauty contests for working trucks.
Owner-operator truckers from across the United States and Canada will compete for cash and prizes valued at $25,000. Additionally, 13 lucky drivers will be selected to have their trucks featured in the 2009 Shell Rotella SuperRigs calendar.
Trucks are judged by industry professionals who work for major trucking publications and broadcast companies. Judges score the rigs on exterior appearance, design, detail/finish, originality and workmanship. In total, 25 working trucks receive awards for categories such as best of show, tractor, tractor-trailer combination and classic categories.
Land Line Magazine Senior Editor Jami Jones is one of the judges for the event, as she has been for several years. Every summer she heads out wondering how the trucks will manage to top those from the previous year. Each year she returns to the newsroom, still in a state of awe, with stories of yet another group of remarkable vehicles.
This year, every entrant in the contest will receive a gift package valued at more than $50, while supplies last. In addition, SuperRigs will include musical performances from Joey Holiday, the 29 Shell-Pennzoil Kevin Harvick show car, Shell racing simulator, bingo and other activities.
