Slowdown expected on I-5 in Washington

Truckers who travel on Interstate 5 through Bellingham, WA, are not going to enjoy this April Fool’s Day. They’ll experience a big slowdown that is not a prank and is expected to last two months.

The state DOT says there will be variable nighttime and weekend lane closures during a two-month period. Crews will replace 212 broken concrete panels, pave four rough ramps, and smooth 11 bumpy transitions across bridges.

This section of road, which was built in the 1950s, needs repairs to better meet the needs of the nearly 80,000 drivers who use it every day. The work will cost $4.5 million.

On some weekends, traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction, which the DOT says will cause significant delays.
