European Union explores secure truck stops

The European Union is launching a pilot program that plenty of American and Canadian truckers would like to see on this side of the pond.

British trucking publications report that the EU wants to set up a network of secure truck parking areas throughout Europe. The fenced enclosures would have security 24-7. No word yet on the cost to truckers.

A recent report commissioned by the EU found that the theft of tractor-trailers costs more than $8 billion a year and affects about 90,000 drivers.

The report says thieves have used guns, knockout gas and even bogus police uniforms to steal rigs.
