Some law enforcement officers say they don’t like high-speed chases because they endanger innocent people, but that they hate to let suspects simply drive away.
The Kansas City Star reports that a Virginia company has come up with something dubbed StarChase that could give police the best of both worlds.
StarChase is a laser-guided launcher that is mounted on the grill of a squad car and that fires projectiles at fleeing vehicles.
The projectiles contain a GPS beacon and are coated with a sticky substance so they will adhere to the car. If the devices stick, police can drop their chase and track the car by GPS.
The devices aren’t in use yet, but Los Angeles police are testing them.
