Trailer wheels kill Indiana police officer

A Shelbyville, IN, police officer was killed Wednesday night, Oct. 10, when the rear dual wheels of a semi trailer broke loose and struck him as he worked a traffic stop beside Interstate 74.

While the trucker is usually cited in such cases, in this case, the police told reporters they intended to let the driver proceed, after repairs.

According to the Indianapolis Star, the driver – Michal Prerovsky – didn’t realize the wheels had come off and was stopped by police down the road.

Police said there was no grease on the hub of the missing wheels.

Prerovsky, who told the Star he was driving for Chicago-based Zone Express, told investigators that the trailer was old, but that he didn’t know how old. A call by a Star  reporter to Zone Express found the number disconnected.

“Do we know if this was (caused by) poor maintenance?” a highway patrol trooper told the Star. “Not at this time.”
