OOIDA members sweep SuperRigs top honors

Members of the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association swept the 25th Annual Rotella SuperRigs Best of Show honors.

The 25th Annual Rotella SuperRigs ran from Thursday, June 20, through Saturday, June 23. More than 120 competitors strutted their stuff at the Joplin Petro hoping to not only secure the title of best of the best and some of the $25,000 in prize money, but also one of 13 coveted spots on the SuperRigs calendar.

OOIDA member Curtis Christians of Rockport, MO, took Best of Show with his reinvented 2005 Peterbilt 379 and added 2005 Great Dane trailer. Curtis took Best of Show runner-up in Wildwood, FL, in 2005 with the same truck, but with a very different look.

Two years ago, the truck sported a predominately white paint job with orange accents in a minimalist “white out” treatment – one with little chrome, aluminum or stainless. In what appeared to be a flip-flop for the ages, Curtis rolled into the 25th Annual SuperRigs in the same truck, only this time in all black with red accents.

Best of Show winners in the 2005 and 2006 SuperRigs, members Tom and Kim Turner from Cynthiana, KY, almost pulled off a three-peat. But, in the end, they were edged out by Curtis – who had finished runner-up to them in 2005.

The Turner’s western themed “El Dorado,” a teakwood and beige 1995 Peterbilt 379 and 2003 Transcraft step deck, was awarded Best of Show runner-up.

Members Bob and Shelley Brinker of Grayling, MI, took Best of Show second runner-up honors. The 2000 Freightliner Classic XL themed inside and out, top to bottom, with the “Pirates of the Caribbean” movie trilogy also earned the highly regarded “People’s Choice” honors.

Competitors were judged by five judges in five different categories.
