Poll shows NJ residents oppose toll road lease or sale

A poll released this week by AAA Clubs of New Jersey found that more than half of the motorists surveyed are opposed to the leasing or selling of the New Jersey Turnpike to a private contractor.

The auto club surveyed 1,000 drivers in the state and found that 56 percent opposed a sale or lease. However, 65 percent said that, if such a deal were to take place, all proceeds should be exclusively reserved for transportation needs.

The poll also found that 24 percent of those surveyed remain undecided about how to finance improvements to the turnpike.

In a press release, Joel Vittori, CEO of AAA's South Jersey chapter, urged state lawmakers to "get their constituents involved, sooner rather than later, in any decision to sell or lease state assets."
