Watch those spring weight restrictions

| 3/16/2007

In many parts of the country, spring has sprung - and when the ground thaws in the northern tier states, weight restrictions are put in effect.

In fact, 18 states and all of the Canadian provinces have spring weight restrictions that typically go into effect in mid-March. Road restrictions apply to country roads and some state highways, but not to the Interstate system. States take the violations seriously and fines can be steep.

Minnesota - which already had restrictions in the southern part of the state - this week imposed the rules in the northern part, too. Wisconsin put its weight restrictions into effect Monday. According to a state DOT news release, the restrictions only apply to 170 miles of roadway - or about 2 percent of all of the state's highways. South Dakota began Mar 12, adding restrictions every day this week.
