Freightliner officials are planning to lay off nearly 2,000 additional workers and stop making trucks in its Portland, OR, facilities.
The Portland-based company said in a press release that it will lay off 800 of its workers in Portland and cut another 1,180 jobs at its assembly plant near Charlotte, NC.
Company officials told The Associated Press the job cuts are prompted by slumping sales as potential buyers balk at the higher cost of the 2007 models.
Freightliner earlier announced 800 layoffs in Ontario, Canada, and said that more than 4,000 workers company-wide could be laid off in the early months of this year.
The company also announced that it’s building a new $300 million truck manufacturing plant in Mexico.
