The chairman and CEO of FedEx has joined other executives in calling on Congress to pass measures making the U.S. less dependent on foreign oil.

According to the New York Times, FedEx's Frederick Smith recently urged lawmakers to set stronger fuel economy standards for both cars and trucks.

Smith also called for more domestic oil drilling and a bigger push to develop alternative fuels.

Smith is part of a group called the Energy Security Leadership Council that includes former high-level military officers and executives from companies like Dow Chemical and Southwest Airlines.
