An Illinois company that makes suspension systems for heavy trucks plans to lay off more than one-third of its employees at a Stratford, Ontario, Canada, plant.

Today's Trucking reported that the plant, which makes heavy springs for Sterling Truck in St. Thomas and International Truck and Engine in Chatham, Ont., will lay off 150 workers.

Last week, Sterling sent layoff notices to 800 employees and International Truck and Engine spokesman said the company gave notice to 640 workers on Dec. 4.

In a press release, a spokesman for Hendrickson said a "predicted significant decline in the heavy truck market" is prompting the layoffs.

The spokesman said the layoffs will affect both salaried and hourly personnel.
