J.B. Hunt founder dead at age 79

Johnnie Bryan Hunt Sr., founder of J.B. Hunt Transport of Lowell, AR, died Thursday, Dec.7, 2006, at the age of 79, the company has reported.

Hunt had been in the hospital this week with head injuries related to a fall on the ice last Saturday.

The founder started with five trucks and a handful of reefer trailers in 1969, and while he left the company in 1982, Hunt laid the foundation for one of North America's largest publicly traded trucking company. He served on the board of directors until 1995.

Hunt was born in 1927 in Cleburne County, AR, to rural sharecroppers. Throughout his life, he was involved in numerous business ventures.

He was married for 54 years to his wife, Johnelle, who, along with their son, Bryan, remains on the J.B. Hunt board.
