Overnite settles discrimination lawsuit with black applicants

Overnite Transportation will pay nearly a quarter-of-a-million dollars in back pay and interest to settle a racial discrimination case.

A Department of Labor press release said the company discriminated when it turned away 260 black applicants for dock worker jobs at its South Holland, IL, facility in 2003 and 2004.

Besides making the payments, the DOT reported that Overnite will also hire 15 of the applicants.

Overnite's less-than-truckload operation was bought by UPS last summer.
