Peters: 'Nothing immediately planned' on Mexican trucks

U.S. Transportation Secretary Mary Peters says there's "nothing immediately planned" in regard to opening the border to Mexican trucks.

Peters made the remark at an annual American Trucking Association meeting on Tuesday in Grapevine, TX.

According to Peters, the Bush administration still definitely plans to open the border at some point - but only when it can be demonstrated that Mexican trucks and drivers meet U.S. safety standards.

On another subject, Peters said she'd prefer to use incentives to get new safety equipment onto trucks, as opposed to mandates. The ATA has called for a federal mandate that would require speed limiters on all new trucks.
