Goodyear announced Monday that it will close its tire plant
in Tyler, TX, eliminating about 1,100 jobs.
Goodyear's union employees went on strike Oct. 5, partly
because the company was threatening to close two plants, including the Tyler operation.
Goodyear has told its investors it will cut costs by more
than $1 billion in two years - and charges that the Steelworkers Union refuses
to help it remain competitive.
The union counters that the plant closings are unnecessary
and that Goodyear is demanding other unacceptable concessions.
