Transportation official says federal bridges safe in Ontario

Canada's transport minister says all the federal bridges in Ontario have been re-inspected and are safe for traffic.

According to Canada's CNW Group, Minister Lawrence Cannon had requested that Crown corporations, including the Blue Water Bridge Authority, the Federal Bridge Corporation Limited, the National Capital Commission and the Peace Bridge Authority, provide a synopsis of inspection practices and the current condition of federal bridges.

"We took immediate action to ensure that all federal bridges are safe and secure and that inspections are done on a regular basis," Cannon said.

That reassurance comes following the Sept. 30 collapse of an overpass in a Montreal suburb that killed five people.

Investigators believe improperly installed metal rods, or re-bar, may have been to blame in that incident.
