ArvinMeritor recalls 3,800 drivelines

| Tuesday, October 17, 2006

Manufacturer ArvinMeritor recalled nearly 3,800 power train drivelines because of the potential for parts to separate.

The recall affects certain high angle, inter-axle drivelines with the model No. RPL20, shipped to Volvo Trucks North America and Freightliner between June 15 and Aug. 28 of this year, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

According to the NHTSA recall summary, "an improper seated or missing snap ring can result in the bearing cup to separate from the slip yoke sub-assembly."

If such a separation occurs, the vehicle could become inoperable, or worse, separate in motion and cause a crash.

Volvo and Freightliner are notifying owners, and will replace the defective parts at no charge, according to the recall notice.

Owners of this product are encouraged to contact their truck manufacturer or contact ArvinMeritor directly at (243) 435-8793.

The NHTSA vehicle safety hotline is 1-888-327-4236. Information is also available at the Web site, www.safercar.gov.
